Summary
The aim of this work is twofold: on the one hand, to clearly outline Barth’s pneumatology as presented in the Kirchliche Dogmatik (KD), and on the other hand, to demonstrate the consequences such a pneumatology has for understanding the congregation, the church, and its role in society. Furthermore, this work explores the extent to which Barth’s theology is viable in the age of so-called postmodernism. In an era marked by the disintegration of coherent narratives—the «master story» often considered common sense—it is crucial for theology to present its distinctive theological alternatives clearly in the space of public discourse. This involves uncovering the potential of a consistently Trinitarian conception of God and His history with universal purpose.
The God who is conceived in the Christian tradition as the unity of Father, Son, and Spirit can only be understood through the story of Jesus of Nazareth. However, humans can only participate in this story if the work of the Holy Spirit is acknowledged both in history and in the specific histories of individuals. Accordingly, the Holy Spirit should not only be understood as a guarantor of God’s transcendence, as some studies on the subject suggest, but also, and perhaps even more importantly, as an identity-forming force for Christians.
If the current era—the so-called postmodern age—represents a fundamental crisis (one that arguably began not recently but as early as the early modern period, or even earlier) and poses a threat to identity, Christian theology can make a significant contribution to identity formation. This is especially relevant in light of the question of the human subject, whose construction has become fragile and, for some, even untenable. If humanity is to be understood humanely, as Barth intended, theology has the task of contributing to an adequate—truly humane—understanding. Can the doctrine of the Trinitarian understanding of God, and specifically the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, aid in this effort?
Being in relationship constitutes the specific nature of Christian life. This relationality, conceived as being grounded in a general history that becomes individually significant, is pivotal. The Holy Spirit, as an identity-forming, binding, constitutive, and liberating force, helps us achieve a deeper understanding of God’s history with humanity. It allows individuals to find their place within God’s history and, above all, a place for their own stories. The work shows how pneumatology, in particular, creates the possibility for individuals to become participants in an ordered, universally purposeful history within the context of the so-called postmodern public sphere.
Answering methodological questions, especially in theology, has never been an easy task, and this remains true today. With this broad and somewhat unguarded statement, I wish to highlight that identifying the appropriate method is not always straightforward. The following sections address the methodological issues I encountered in this thesis. Put simply: how is Barth to be read? This question recalls George Hunsinger’s assertion about how Barth is read. My starting point, however, is that no canonized method of reading Karl Barth exists that guarantees success. This is perhaps why the Dutch theologian Kornelis Heiko Miskotte referred to his interpretations of the KD as preludes and fantasies—an approach he adopted quite early on. In my view, this is an appropriate way of engaging with the KD, a text so rich in content. The following provides some guidance on interpreting Barth’s theology, at least as preludes.
a. Barth’s Church Dogmatics can be read as a multifaceted work, one in which a movement of thought is initiated and sustained. Emphasis should be placed on the latter—the movement. The language, structure, and style of the KD resist a rigid, once-and-for-all conceptualization. On closer analysis, it becomes apparent that significant shifts in emphasis occur within the KD regarding individual dogmatic themes. Any attempt to reconstruct Barth’s pneumatology must first undertake a deconstruction to identify and clarify these shifts in emphasis. These shifts are not incidental; they underscore different aspects of theological doctrines and serve as indicators of the progression of Barth’s theological thought.
b. Analyzing the guiding principles of individual chapters is similarly illuminating. A closer examination reveals that these principles form a well-structured whole. Studying them provides important insights into the structure and direction of Barth’s thought. It is also significant how certain terms and moments are emphasized within these guiding principles. This analysis is particularly important for understanding the motif of the Holy Spirit and pneumatology.
c. At the direct textual level, careful attention is required. The «ecstasy of language,» a distinctive strength of the KD, often reveals significant shifts in linguistic style. Notably, the style evolves markedly from the beginning to the end of the KD. Specifically, there is a movement from an «objectifying scientific language» to a «doxological prayer language.» This shift is particularly evident in the IV volumes, particularly in all parts of the Doctrine of Reconciliation. Additionally, Barth frequently employs trichotomies in his language. A closer look reveals that this is present in numerous paragraphs. For instance, the indicative-imperative-vocative modes of language often appear in various sections, emphasizing the content and meaning within their contexts.
Volume IV/1 serves as a paradigmatic example of how the theology of the third article should be carried out in Barth’s framework.
Structure of the Work
The present work is divided into five chapters. The Introduction outlines the choice of topic and the methodological approach.
The First Chapter examines the significance of pneumatology within the classical theological tradition, focusing on its role in the theology of the early church and its relevance today. Two key problem areas are emphasized to shed light on their influence on Barth’s theological decisions: the doctrine of the filioque and the classical issue of de facto binitarianism in early church theology. This chapter also introduces modern pneumatological perspectives, with special attention to recent developments in the theology of the Third Article.
This foundational discussion serves as a prelude to the Second Chapter, which delves into the interpretation of Barth’s theology, drawing paradigmatically on the work of Ingrid Spieckermann, Bruce L. McCormack, and Eberhard Busch. The objective here is to identify and present contemporary approaches in Barth research.
The Third Chapter examines pneumatological reconstructions by Christian Henning, Dietrich Braun, Philip J. Rosato, and Reinhard Hütter. These analyses, some of which are highly critical, highlight the unresolved question of the Holy Spirit’s role in Karl Barth’s theology.
Given the ongoing debates, the Fourth Chapter offers my own reconstruction. Following the methodological considerations outlined earlier, this section begins with an analysis of the overarching structure of Barth’s Church Dogmatics IV series, focusing on the guiding principles. This preliminary structural analysis lays the groundwork for a more detailed grammatical analysis. Using Church Dogmatics IV/1 as a paradigm, I investigate how Barth’s pneumatology operates within his theological framework. I argue that Barth intentionally avoids an isolated pneumatology and address the question of whether it is accurate to speak of a «pneumatological deficit» in Barth’s theology. While a more independent theology of the Holy Spirit might seem desirable in Church Dogmatics, there are significant indications of the Holy Spirit’s integral role within the overarching theological structure and argumentation.
The Final Chapter draws conclusions by situating the findings within the context of postmodernism. Using Luhmann’s systems theory, the chapter briefly explores the significance of religion in postmodern society. The understanding of postmodernism is further analyzed through the works of Jürgen Habermas, Alain Badiou, Giorgio Vattimo, and Giorgio Agamben. The aim is to demonstrate how rationality operates within the systems and subsystems of society, with religion understood as one such subsystem.
Particular emphasis is placed on how these social systems, understood in this way, offer theology an opportunity to bring the specifics of the Christian worldview into dialogue with its own understanding of reality. In this chapter of the thesis, I bring Barth’s theology into dialogue with Erik Peterson’s theology. Peterson assumes that the public nature of the church does not need to be created but is always already present in the worship and service of the church. Through these, the congregation gathers for heavenly worship before the throne of God. The doctrine of the visible and invisible church thus assumes a specific key function. According to Peterson, the public nature of the church becomes clear in three particular aspects: Leiturgia, Martyria, and Diakonia.
I bring these “public” moments of church life into dialogue with Barth’s thesis on the existence of the church in faith, hope, and love. It becomes evident that the public sphere constructed in this way offers a kind of “counter-space” and thus provides a service to society. Different rules apply within this space, leading us to Avishai Margalit’s question about an “honest society.” I believe I can credibly demonstrate that the church, inspired and led by the Spirit of God, can offer an alternative structure within the everyday life of society based on reconciliation. This makes it a social subsystem, effective in the sense of the minimal definition of an “honest society.”
My work shows that Barth’s theology, despite its justified criticisms and desiderata, provides decisive impulses for rethinking the role of the church in society. Its cautious approach to reality ensures the flexibility of its thought structures while simultaneously emphasizing that the church is always dependent on the prayer Veni Creator Spiritus if it is to fulfill its task in society.
